World Population

The world population has experienced continuous growth since the end of the Great Famine and the Black Death (1) in 1350, when it was (2) near 370 million. The highest growth rates – global population increases above 1.8% per year – occurred briefly (3) during the 1950s, and (4) for longer (5) during the 1960s and 1970s. The global growth rate peaked (6) at 2.2% in 1963, and has declined to (7) below 1.1% as of 2012. Total annual births were highest (8) in the late 1980s at about 138 million.

Although the growth has slowed down (9) in recent years, it will be many years (10) before it stops. The reason why this growth is causing so much concern is that we cannot keep up with the corresponding increase (11) in demand (12) for food, water, healthcare, jobs, education and housing.

Much of the growth has been in the poorer countries (13) of the world, but overpopulation is also a problem for some rich countries, including Britain. (14) With a population (15) of approximately 60 million, Britain has more than 233 inhabitants per square kilometre.
